CONFLICTED EXTRA

WHEN MIA MET JACKSON

Four Years Earlier

I glanced at the room number to ensure it was the correct classroom. My hands twitched as I strode closer to the door and I began tearing away at my cuticles to calm my growing anxiety. It was ridiculous for me to be nervous at all. My plan had always been journalism, so why my body was wound up this much was beyond me. I opened the door and strode into the room, noticing it was completely empty and giving me my pick of the seats. Knowing I had a class right after this one, I took a seat at a table near the door. I sifted through my messenger bag and grabbed my textbook before flinging it over the back of my chair. Seeing there was a good half-hour left before class would start, I opened the book and began reading the first chapter. I was more than familiar with the material, so this was purely a time filler for me. I ground my teeth together before rolling my eyes at how remedial this was going to be for me. Even with all my advanced courses from high school, it still wasn’t enough for me to get out of Intro to Journalism.

Suck it up, Mia. You got out of taking any math or business, so who cares if you suffer through this one. This class will be an easy A for you. Look at it as time extra to make an impression to get on the newspaper.

I groaned, hating the fact my subconscious was right. The extra time was definitely needed to secure a spot on the paper and it also gave me more time to find a job, make new friends, and not to mention time with Micah. My mind drifted to our morning, making me smile wide as I recalled all the dirty little details of it. Normally, I hated mornings and getting up, but he was giving me a whole new outlook on it. He was already making this huge life transition for me just as easy as when I left Chase’s at the beginning of our senior year. The sense of peace his presence always gave me flowed through every facet of me and I couldn’t help but smile like a love-sick schoolgirl because of it.

A loud thud, then searing pain coasting up my shoulder, abruptly ended the serene feelings I had moments ago. My attacker stumbled over to the seat next to me, put his head in his hands, and massaged his temples. His baseball cap was on backwards, but his jet-black hair was poking out in all directions, making it look like he just got out of bed. After looking at his clothes, I doubted he even went to bed. His jeans were wrinkled, the SinSanity rock t-shirt he had on was inside out, and his combat boots were untied. The only thing he had going for him were the tattoos covering every inch of his arms. My eyes drifted along them, taking in the impressive patterns and making me lick my lips. There was just something about a guy with tattoos I had a weakness for and my body reacted the same way every time. I shook my head a few times to cease the naughty thoughts creeping into my head.

I made a mental note to talk to Micah about getting one. He wasn’t under his parents’ roof now, so his past excuses wouldn’t work anymore. Doing my best not to stare, I glanced at the guy’s face for a better look. He took several deep breaths, almost like he was trying to prevent himself from puking all over, before gripping his stomach. Deciding to take pity on his poor soul, I moved my text, notebook, and pen off to the side, and strode over to grab the trashcan off to near our table. I hauled it over and plopped it in front of him before sitting back down. Seeing his face go from stark white to an off shade of green, I slid back a few feet, and not a moment too soon, because he dry-heaved and belched for a few minutes. Taking in the rancid scent, I had no doubt he drank a shitload of Jack Daniels last night.

After catching his bearings, he gave the trashcan a swift kick and sent it back to its spot near the door. An inadvertent giggle escaped from me. It was a damn smooth move for someone who was still probably drunk. He rubbed his hands down his face a few times before pulling out a pen from his back pocket. Seemingly somewhat with it, his gaze drifted over to me, giving me a clear view of his face. His chiseled cheekbones and sparkly blue eyes had me licking my lips all over again.

Holy shit! He’s smoking hot! If I wasn't completely in love with Micah, I’d be all over him in a hot minute.

I blinked my eyes while shaking my head to get rid of the inappropriate thoughts this guy kept giving me. When his eyes zeroed in on my chest and he began running his tongue along his bottom lip, it was too difficult for me. The black tank top and ragged pair of jeans I had on didn’t really warrant his reaction. He continued to run his eyes across my body as his tongue grazed his teeth before giving a head nod of approval. I rolled my eyes, grabbed my stuff, and looked around for a different table. My search ended as quickly as it started when the professor clapped his hands together and his TA started to take roll call. I grunted and fell back into my seat. His eyes danced, loving I wasn’t able to escape from his unashamed gaze.

Greeaattt. He’s one of those guys. God, please let this be the one and only time I have to sit next to him.

My fingers angrily picked away at my cuticles as I bit the inside of my cheek, utterly annoyed I was stuck next to this guy.  To make matters worse, there were like fifty people in this lecture and the TA was like the damn teacher in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. I didn’t think it was possible for a person to be that mundane.

“My name is Jackson. And who might you be, gorgeous?” my new friend asked before running his fingers down my arm.

“I know your type. Don’t even bother. I have a boyfriend,” I retorted, yanking my arm away and crossing them over my chest.

Jackson winked. “Rarrr, aren’t you a feisty one? It’s okay, darling, I love a challenge.”

I rolled my eyes, praying I’d only have to deal with him today.

“Jackson Reid,” the TA called out.

“Here. For you ladies, I’m here every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. And I’m over in Larson’s dorm – Room 212 – every day of the week. Come one, come all,” Jackson answered with a smug grin.

Lord, he’s beyond full of himself. He’s giving cocky a new definition.

“Mia Ryan,” the TA called next.

“Here,” I replied, raising my hand.

As they rattled off the remaining names on the list, Jackson stared at every part of my body, making me squirm. He was making a spectacle out of himself by doing so, not to mention pissing off the other two girls at our table he was ignoring. I was about to make a run for it when the professor cleared his throat.

“As you can see from the syllabuses being passed out, I’m Professor Barry. This is my TA, Chris Wood. I hope you’re comfortable in your spot because it will be your assigned seat for the semester. This will also be the group you meet with for your discussion every Tuesday and Thursday. There will be no changes. You’re in college now. If you have a problem, figure it out. I’m not here to play hall monitor. I’m here to teach. With that being said, let’s get started with today’s lecture,” Mr. Barry finished, his tone somber.

Unfuckingbelieveable. I’m stuck with this guy all semester. Shoot me now!

Jackson flashed a cocky grin while rolling his fingers together. I flipped my book open to the chapter we were covering today. He slid his chair so close to me that our arms were touching. I cringed and tried to slide my chair away from him, but he was quick to stop me. I opened my mouth to tell off, but he pinched my lips shut.

“No sense in fighting it, doll. As you can see, I don’t have a textbook, so the big guy up there is just going to make you share with me anyway,” Jackson pointed out before licking his lips again.

My body shook with the frustration I was trying to contain, knowing he was absolutely right. I didn’t have a leg to stand on and I wasn’t about to embarrass myself over this punk. I kept the book in front of us and tilted my head to him. “You better come prepared on Wednesday. I’m not going to let you leech off me the entire semester,” I said through gritted teeth.

Jackson shrugged before fiddling with his lip ring. “You’re hot and you have a smartass comment for everything. This is going to be a fun, sweetheart. You’ll warm to me before you know it. This isn’t even my A game.”

He happened to open his mouth wide enough for me to see he had a tongue ring too. I swallowed a few times before looking away, utterly embarrassed I’d been staring at him. Jackson arched an eyebrow. I ignored him and focused on my book. He leaned into my ear and whispered, “Don’t fight it, darling. You know you like what you see. Believe me when I say, I like what you have to offer.”

“Would you shut up? I’m trying to focus here. I just have to get this stupid class out of the way to enroll in the junior level ones

I should be in now,” I hissed, giving him my stink eye for good measure.

Jackson swayed away, smirking as he did. His eyes danced as his dimples emerged, making my stomach roll nonstop. “Ah, a fellow Journalism major. Looks like we’ll be spending a lot of time with each other over the next four years.”

WHY, GOD? THERE IS GOING TO BE NO GETTING RID OF HIM NOW! FUCK!!

I counted to ten, hoping this was just a nightmare and I’d wake up any minute. He tapped on my shoulder with a knowing look in his eyes, and I groaned once again before tossing my head back in disgust. Jackson entertained himself the entire hour by pestering me. He stole my textbook and notebook throughout the lecture and went out of his way to be as close to me as possible without drawing attention to us. The second Mr. Barry announced the end of the class, I jumped from my seat, shoved my stuff into my bag, tossed it over my shoulder, and hustled for the door. I entered the hallway and was at a near sprint to get as far away from him and on to my next class.

“You can run, but you can’t hide. I’ll see you tomorrow, darling,” Jackson shouted.

Not caring what people thought, I ran down the hall without giving him a second glance. My teeth clenched together, knowing Jackson was going to be a thorn in my side. He wasn’t going away anytime soon, so I’d have to find a way to get him to be my friend. Otherwise, he was going to drive me insane.
